Double Antoninianus (?)
Lot # 520
Gallienus (253-268). BI Double (?) Antoninianus, Mediolanum mint. Obv. GALLIENVS AVG. Radiate head right. Rev. VIRTVS AVG. Mars standing facing, head left, resting right hand on shield and holding spear. Cf. RIC V 534. BI. 5.54 g. 19.70 mm. RRR. Very interesting example, struck on thick and overweight flan. Traces of silvering. About VF. Very rare heavy specimen, weighting twice the standard weight for an antoninianus of this period. Such anomalous issues are known for a number of reigns in the later third century AD.
