Crocodile right chained to palm branch; wreath with long ties above, palms below.RPC I 523; SNG Copehagen 696-8.The name of the city Nemausus derives from a Celtic god worshipped by the Volcae Arecomici, who had established their capital here, later transformed by Augustus into Colonia Augusta Nemausus (27 BC). The symbol of the city was the Egyptian crocodile chained to a palm tree that appears on the reverse of this coin series, which features the portraits of Augustus and his lieutenant Agrippa on the obverse. The types are a clear allusion to the founding of the city by legionaries returning from the Egyptian campaigns and to Augustus' victory, thanks to Agrippa, over Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium (31 BC). Two dancing Corybantes, holding swords and raising shields.RPC VII.2 1233; Varbanov 4186.The Corybantes, initially linked to the Phrygian cult of Cybele, are part of the story of the early days of Zeus' life. Kronos wanted to kill all the children he fathered because an oracle had predicted that one of his newborns, once grown, would sooner or later dethrone him. To prevent this, being immortal themselves and unable to simply kill them, he swallowed them as soon as they were born. For this reason, his wife Rhea, on the advice of her parents, decided to give birth to Zeus in secret on the island of Crete. The Corybantes, described as armed warriors, were tasked with making a terrible noise by incessantly beating their swords on their shields, so that the cries of the newborn would not reach Cronos' ears and reveal Rhea's deception. Serpent Glycon coiled right, with human head and long hair.Varbanov 4519.Extremely RareGlycon was a snake with a human head worshipped in the city of Abonuteichus in Paphlagonia as the reincarnation of Asklepios. The cult was established during the reign of Antoninus Pius by a certain Alexander of Pella. He used a large tame snake to which he attached a human head made from a painted sheet and horsehair. From the movement of the monster's tongue, Alexander drew very expensive responses for the worshippers. This fraud made him rich and developed into a structured cult, with priests and many followers. Mysteries were even established with sacred representations of the birth of Asklepios, and Glycon even appeared on the gems and coins of Abonuteichus, Pautalia e Nicomedia.
