She was the muse of epic poetry, considered Homer's favorite and believed to be the inspiration for the Iliad and the Odyssey. Calliope was also known for being the mother of Orpheus and Linus, two highly talented musicians. The father of her children could have been the god Apollo or Oeagrus, king of Thrace, depending on the different versions of the myth. According to one tradition, she was loved by Zeus, with whom she generated the Corybantes, figures associated with ritual dance. Calliope is considered the oldest and wisest of the Muses, also famous for her confidence and authority. She played a significant role in the dispute between Aphrodite and Persephone over Adonis: acting as an impartial judge, she decreed that each of the two goddesses should spend the same amount of time with the young man. On the obverse, the coin depicts the head of the fourth king of Rome, Ancus Marcius, identified by the legend, from whom the Marcia gens claimed to descend and who, according to a legend (reported by Pliny the Elder), was the first to provide an aqueduct to the city. The reverse depicts an equestrian statue (Marcius Rex) placed on an arched structure, clearly identified as an aqueduct by the legend. The aqueduct depicted here was built in 144 BC by Marcius Rex (to whom the statue refers), and supplied water to many areas of Rome. It was over 90 km long and mostly underground. As was common in the Republican period, the designs on both sides are purely propagandistic, aimed at celebrating the gens to which the monetary magistrate belonged, with references to mythical and historical ancestors, legitimizing his personal ambitions. The richest part, bordering the Roman province, was given to Adherbal; the westernmost part to Jugurtha. Soon the two princes were again in conflict and Adherbal was killed (112 BC). Rome then declared war on Jugurtha and sent first L.C. Bestia, then Q. Caecilius Metellus (later known as Metellus Numidicus), who achieved an important victory in 108 BC. In 107 BC, Marius was elected consul and led another campaign against Jugurtha, who had meanwhile allied himself with Bocchus of Mauretania. In the end, Bocchus betrayed Jugurtha and handed him over to L. Cornelius Sulla, sent by Marius, who dragged him in chains to Rome in 104. Cornucopia, supporting scales, set on curule chair; grain ear and head of Cetus flanking chair.Crawford 460/2; CRI 41; RBW 1602.Very rareA great example of a very rare denarius, struck by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio (Nasica), supreme commander of Pompey's forces, together with his lieutenant Licinius Crassus Iunianus Damasippus. Metellus Scipio was consul with Pompey in 52 and governor of Syria in 49. He took part in the Battle of Pharsalus in 48, commanding the centre of Pompey's army. After the defeat, he fled to Africa and allied himself with Juba I, king of Numidia. This denarius was struck in Utica and recalls the wealth and fertility of Africa, symbolized by the images on the reverse (cornucopia, scales, ear of corn). The portrait of Jupiter, associated with the eagle and the sceptre, recalls the bust of Jupiter Terminus depicted on a denarius of Pompey minted in Greece (Crawford 447/1), and was evidently adopted as a symbol of Pompeian propaganda. The head of Cetus, combined with the curule chair as a symbol of power, could be opposed to the depiction of the dragon crushed by the elephant on Julius Caesar's famous denarius (Crawford 443/1). His uncle Cato the Younger was responsible for his political education, raising him as a supporter of the democracy. He sided with Pompey against Caesar but, after the defeat at Pharsalus (48 BC), he obtained his pardon and the office of propraetor in Cisalpine Gaul (47-45 BC). However, he was drawn into the conspiracy against Caesar and became one of its leaders, participating in the stabbing on the Ides of March (44 BC). He was then forced to flee Rome and take refuge in the East, when this denarius was minted, and where he prepared a strong army which, united with that of Crassus, clashed with the forces of the triumvirs at Philippi (42 BC).
