Diademed and draped bust of Salome left.RPC I 3840; Kovacs 300; Hendin 1257a.RareSalome, daughter of Herod II and Herodias, is famous for the dance she performed during Herod Antipas' banquet.
The incestuous and adulterous love between Herod and Herodias was denounced as shameful by the preacher and moralist John the Baptist. Herod had him imprisoned to silence these insinuations, but he kept postponing the death sentence that Herodias demanded. The woman then decided to use her daughter and the interest that Herod Antipas showed in her. During the king's birthday feast, Salome performed a sensual dance that so pleased the birthday celebrant that he promised the girl he would grant her any wish. Salome then, on her mother's advice, asked for John the Baptist's head on a platter. The sentence was executed and the prophet's head was delivered to Herodias.
She later became queen of Lesser Armenia by marrying Aristobulus of Chalcis, her cousin, with whom she had three children. According to Christian legend, Salome died while crossing a frozen river: the ice broke, the woman fell in, and the ice closed back together, decapitating her.
The story of Salome has inspired numerous literary, musical, and film productions. Condition: Very fine.Weight: 4.21 g. Diameter: 29 mm.Estimate: 10000,00 €
