Apparently unlisted in the standard references. Choice example. Dark green patina with red earthen deposits. Interesting study coin. Good VF. Despite the Cyprus issue begins with the RY 17 and the exergue CON, the style of the coin and the depiction of the obverse (cross instead globus cruciger) suggest a different attribution. Intriguing the hypothesis of an early issue with the mint mark of Constantia (Salamina).

Irene's sole reign lasted from the deposition and blinding of her son Constantine VI on 19 August 797 to her own deposition at the hands of the partisans of Nicephorus I on 30 October 802. In her gold coinage the obverse was naturally occupied by her own bust, but for the reverse she could not fall back on the expedient employed since the reign of Constantine V of representing the effiges of one or more of her predecessors. Instead of reviving the ancient cross-on-steps type, she preferred to have herself depicted a second time, thus creating a precedent which was occasionally followed in the future. Exciting Simeon The Great's Seal

Lot # 783 - Simeon I Veliki (Simeon the Great), Tsar of Bulgaria (893-927). PB Seal. Obv. Facing bust of Christ, holding book of Gospels in left hand, right hand in benediction; cross behind head; border of pellets. Rev. Crowned and jewelled facing female bust. Jordanov Type III.2B; Youroukova 9a/8b (obv./rev.). PB. 18.58 g. 26.50 mm. RRR. Extremely rare. Exceptional lead seal, with enchanting ochre and grey patina. Detailed and perfectly preserved portrait of Simeon I Veliki. EF. Seals of this type have been assigned to the reign of Simeon the Great of Bulgaria. Educated in Constantinople, Simeon was greatly influenced by Byzantine culture. Nonetheless, he was at war with the Byzantine Empire for much of his reign, and in 913 he marched on Constantinople, where he was crowned Tsar (Caesar) of Bulgaria by the Patriarch Nicholas I Mystikos. This seal reveals the influence of Byzantine culture on the court of Simeon. The obverse image of Christ is similar to seals of Byzantine emperors, such as Leon VI and Michael VII, and on the reverse is depicted Simeon himself, as is clearly demonstrated by the presence of the beard (corr. Triton XI (2008), lot 1214 note).

Lot # 785 - Romanus IV, Diogenes (1068-1071). AV Histamenon Nomisma, Constantinople mint. Obv. The three sons of Constantine X and Eudocia, standing facing: Michael holding labarum and akakia, between Constantius and Andronicus, each holding globus cruciger and akakia; dotted exergual band. Rev. Christ standing facing on footstool, crowning Romanus and the empress Eudocia, each holding globus cruciger. D.O. 2; Sear 1861. AV. 4.25 g. 27.50 mm. Scarce. VF/ Good VF. Eudocia ruled as regent from the death of her husband Constantine X in May of 1067 until the end of the year. At the time, the empire was facing a military crisis in the east as the Seljuq Turks advanced further into Asia Minor, and the prevailing feeling was that a competent military leader should be emperor. Eudocia, despite having declared that she would never remarry, took the hand of Romanus IV Diogenes on 1 January 1068. Romanus’ own rule lasted a little over two and a half years, as he was captured by the Turks at the Battle of Mantzikert in August of 1071. Eudocia was re-established as regent for two months before being coerced into retiring to a convent. (Triton XVIII, 1347 note).

Ο/ ΣΤΕ/ ΦΑ/ ΝΟ/ C - Ο/ ΠAN/ ΤΟ/ ΜΑΡ/ ΤY/ C. St. Stephanos standing, holding a small casket and a censer. Rev. ΣΦΡΑΓΙC/ CTΕΦANOΥ/ ΜΕΓΑΛOΥ/ ΖΟΥΠΑΝΟΥ/ ΤΟΥ ΝΕΜΑ/ NIA. PB. 20.92 g. 35.00 mm. RRR. Extremely rare. About EF. Nemanja became grand župan (clan leader) of Raška under Byzantine suzerainty in 1169. He subsequently sided with the Venetians and was eventually defeated by the avenging Byzantines, but he was pardoned. Nemanja later conquered Skopje, Prizren, and Tetovo. Though again defeated, he retained Kosovo, Peć, Prizren, Bar, Skadar (Shkodër), and Kotor. In the latter part of his life, he became a monk and hence was referred to as Monk Simeon. After his death, he was canonised by the Orthodox Church, and became St. Symeon the Myrrh-streaming. Conferito come semplice sigillo bizantino, è stato correttamente identificato e classificato dai nostri esperti, attribuendolo a Stefan Nemanja, uno dei padri fondatori della Serbia. Il lotto ha destato moltissima attenzione, non solo tra i numismatici, ma anche tra tutti gli studiosi di storia della Serbia. Il Museo Storico della Serbia ha notato l’importante oggetto, ed ha contattato la nostra casa d’asta chiedendo un’opzione di acquisto diretto.Benché sia inusuale per la nostra casa d’asta ritirare lotti proposti in asta per cederli a trattativa privata, ci siamo prodigati per facilitare la trattativa tra il Museo ed il conferente del lotto.Con soddisfazione per tutte le parti, la trattativa è stata oggi completata e presto questo importante sigillo ritornerà in Serbia, per essere esposto nel Museo Nazionale ed essere ammirato da tutto il Popolo Serbo e dai visitatori di tutto il mondo.———We inform you that lot 788, the lead seal of Stefan Nemanja (1113/4-1199), has been withdrawn from the auction and sold by private treaty to the Istorijski muzej Srbije - Historical Museum of Serbia.The seal was published in our Artemide LIX auction in early April. Conferred as a simple Byzantine seal, it was correctly identified and classified by our experts, attributing it to Stefan Nemanja, one of the founding fathers of Serbia. The lot has aroused a lot of attention, not only among numismatists, but also among all Serbian history scholars. The Historical Museum of Serbia noticed the important object and contacted our auction house asking for a direct purchase option.Although it is unusual for our auction house to withdraw lots offered at auction to sell them by private treaty, we have done our utmost to facilitate the negotiation between the Museum and the consignor of the lot.With satisfaction for all parties, the negotiation was finalized today and soon this important seal will return to Serbia, to be exhibited in the national museum and to be admired by all the Serbian people and visitors from all over the world.
