Extremely rare

Publius Carisius, military and civil governor of Lusitania, is mentioned on this coin as Augustus' legate propraetor. He founded the colony of Colonia Iulia Augusta Emerita (Mérida) as an outpost in an area not yet fully romanized and where he had stationed “emeriti,” meaning veterans discharged with great honors after many years of service.
