Marcus Ulpius Traianus was a Trahius, born in Italica in Spain. His family (Ulpi) was of ancient descent from Tuder (Todi) and belonging to the local nobility. He was senator, consul, proconsul of Asia and governor of Syria. His son Trajan, also born in Italica, was the first emperor born in a Roman province.
