Greek Asia. Asia Minor, uncertain mint. Pamphylia or Cilicia. AR Stater, c. 380-340/330. Obv. Athena standing left, holding crowning Nike and spear and resting on grounded shield; to left, serpent coiled left; to right, three Pamphylian letters. Rev. Apollo standing left, wearing chiton, holding patera over altar and long sceptre with branch on shaft and astragalos at base; to right, Pamphylian legend. Cf. CNG MBS 78, lot 895 & Nomos 12, lot 108 (both with same obverse die). 9.61 g. 22.5 mm. RRR. Extremely rare issue. Metal-flaws, otherwise. VF. Enigmatic issue, not found in any publication. The types are usually associated with Side in Pamphylia and Holmoi in Cilicia, but the respective city emblems (pomegranate and dolphin) are replaced here by the snake, which can hardly suggest the association of a mint from those regions. This piece also differs from the two known examples from auctions (CNG and Nomos) in the reverse, which bears a different sceptre design and a modified legend.
