Paul Delaroche was the son of an art expert. He studied under Louis Étienne Watelet, then under Jean-Antoine Gros. He is best known as the initiator of the historical anecdote genre—art with documentary intent and dramatic sensitivity. He married a daughter of Horace Vernet. Among his students were painters such as Charles-François Daubigny, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jean-François Millet, Gustave Le Gray, and Henri Le Secq.
