VF. During the 14th–15th centuries, the monetary circulation of the northern Black Sea was dominated by Golden Horde aspers and Genoese issues of Caffa. To secure their local validity, especially at Cetatea Albă (Asprokastron), many coins were countermarked with a cross, sometimes surrounded by four pellets. This practice reflects both the control of silver quality and the multicultural character of the region, a crossroads between Tatar, Moldavian, and Genoese spheres.
