The Catholic University of Lublin (est. 1918, renamed into The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin in 2005) is one of the oldest universities in Poland.
Among the group of professors at KUL, one could find Rev. Karol Wojtyła whom the world knew as Pope John Paul II. He commenced his work at the Catholic University in 1954 with lectures on ethics. In 1956 he was already head of the Unit, and subsequently head of the Department of Ethics at the Faculty of Philosophy, which he ran until he was elected to the Holy See.
In 1982, the Pope John Paul II Institute was established to conduct research into his teaching and make his works available to a wider audience. A monument of John Paul II and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was placed in the university court-yard a year later.
