During the reign of Antiochus IV, Commagene reached its maximum extent. In 60, Antiochos obtained from Nero a part of Armenia for his valuable help against the Parthians, and also extended his territory to Lycaonia and southern Cappadocia. Later, however, although he immediately declared himself on the side of Vespasian and had effectively helped Titus in the Jewish war, Antiochus IV was suspected of allying himself with the Parthians. He was attacked by the governor of Syria and deposed in 72. His sons, Epiphanes and Kallinikos, tried unsuccessfully to resist the Roman troops, but Commagene was definitively reduced to a province and joined to Syria.
