JULIUS CAESAR. Denarius (46-45 BC). Military mint traveling with Caesar in Spain.
Obv: Diademed head of Venus right; Cupid to left.

Trophy of Gallic arms; bound captive to left and right.
Crawford 468/1; CRI 58; RBW 1639.
This denarius was struck in Spain towards the end of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey. In 46 BC, he had to return to Spain one last time, where his enemies had reorganized under the command of the two sons of Pompey and Titus Labienus. It was the bloodiest and most difficult campaign of the civil war and ended with the Battle of Munda in April 45, where Caesar faced and definitively defeated the Pompeians. His 18-year-old great-nephew, Octavian, also took part in this battle. He arrived in Spain after a long illness and proved himself so worthy that his uncle adopted him in his testament and made him his heir.
