RIC² 679 (Vespasian); Calicó 812.

Ex M. Jean Vinchon (17 Nov. 1990), lot 46. The issue of this aureus probably refers to the triumph celebrated by Vespasian after his victory in the Jewish War (66-70 AD). According to Suetonius, after prayers and a speech to the soldiers, the emperors put on their triumphal robes and celebrated a sacrifice in honor of the gods. Then they began the procession, passing through the theaters, where the majority of the public had gathered. Statues of many gods, animals of all kinds, and a multitude of prisoners were carried in procession. Vespasian's quadriga preceded that of Titus, while Domitian rode alongside them, heading for the temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill.
