Superb 'Salona' Follis

JUSTINIAN I (527-565). Follis. Military ('Salona') mint.
Obv: Helmeted bust facing, holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right.
Rev: Large M; cross above.
MIBE 248; DOC 358; Sear 329.
Very rare
This rare series of bronze coins does not bear the mint mark on the reverse and has been attributed to Salona in the past due to the discovery of several specimens in that area. There is still no certainty about the correct attribution of the mint and the period of issue, which could fall during the Gothic War (535-553). At that time, Salona was used as headquarters by the Byzantine commanders engaged in the conflict against Baduila, which culminated in the Battle of Busta Gallorum (552) where the Ostrogoth king lost his life.
Condition: Good very fine.
Weight: 7.92 g.
Diameter: 26 mm.
