The episode of the Rape of the Sabine Women is recounted by Livy and Plutarch. According to legend, among the many problems faced by the Romans was a shortage of women. Therefore, in order to ensure the future of the Roman race, various alliances were formed with the aim of finding a way to bring women from neighboring populations to Rome. One of the populations involved was that of the Sabines, who rejected the Roman proposal. Romulus and his companions then took advantage of the games in honor of the god Consus to invite the Sabines and kidnap the women, thus starting the war. But faced with the fact that their Sabine relatives and those who had meanwhile become their Roman husbands could be killed in battle, the women began to beg for an end to the massacre. As a result, what became known as the Rape of the Sabine Women led to a situation of peace and prosperity for the two peoples.
