In book XVII of the Odyssey, Odysseus returns to Ithaka disguised as a beggar and is recognized only by his faithful dog Argos, now old. Once a superb hunting dog, Argos raises his head and wags his tail at the sight of Odysseus, but dies immediately after recognizing him, demonstrating his loyalty and love, preventing him from inadvertently revealing his master's identity and allowing Odysseus to plan his revenge.
