In 43 BC he attained the consulship, having been appointed by Caesar, and was dispatched together with Octavian and Pansa to confront Antony, who was besieging Decimus Brutus at Mutina. Although Hirtius succeeded in defeating Antony, he was killed while leading the assault on Antony’s camp. He is also traditionally credited with completing Caesar’s commentaries on the Gallic, Alexandrine, African, and Spanish wars.
