Commodus (177-193). AE Sestertius, Rome mint, 184-185. D/ M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS BRIT. Laureate head right. R/ VICT BRIT P M TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P S C. Winged and draped Victory seated right on shields, inscribing shield set on knee and held in place by left hand. RIC III 452. AE. 23.49 g. 31 mm. Minor marks. Good VF/VF. This sestertius of Commodus features on the reverse the type VICTORIAE BRITANNICAE, commemorating the restoration of Roman control in Britain in AD 184–185 after a period of serious military unrest. The campaign itself was carried out by imperial commanders, notably Ulpius Marcellus, yet the victory was formally appropriated by the emperor, who assumed the title Britannicus.
