Poland. Second Republic (1918-1939). AR 5 Złotych, 1934. Portrait of Józef Pilsudski. KM Y 28. AR. 11.01 g. 28 mm. Choice example. EF. Józef Klemens Piłsudski (5th December 1867 – 12th May 1935) was a Polish statesman who served as the Chief of State (1918–1922) and first Marshal of Poland (from 1920). Piłsudski is viewed as a father of the Second Polish Republic, which was re-established in 1918, 123 years after the final partition of Poland in 1795, and was considered de facto leader (1926–1935) of the Second Republic as the Minister of Military Affairs.
Although some aspects of Piłsudski's administration, such as imprisoning his political opponents at Bereza Kartuska, are controversial, he remains one of the most influential figures in Polish 20th century history and is widely regarded as a founder of modern Poland.
