Egypt. Farouk (1936-1952). 2 quirsh 1363 (1944). KM 369. 2.84 g. 21 mm. Light patina. Frosty surfaces, as struck. Rare as such. FDC. Due to the sharp rise in silver prices during the Second World War, many countries were forced to modify or replace their silver coinage. Egypt had used the same size and silver alloys for over a century, but wartime silver prices caused the intrinsic value of the 2 piastre coin to exceed its face value, leading to hoarding and melting. The government responded by banning resale and melting, and introduced a new 2 piastre coin made of a lower silver alloy (.500 instead of .833) and with a new shape for easy identification. This coin was struck in large quantities to meet national currency needs for many years. Eventually, coinage materials declined further to base metals, as later seen during the United Arab Republic period with the 5 and 10 piastre coins.
