In the Roman world, wreaths were normally awarded in the distribution of military spoils, by the commander to those who had distinguished themselves in action. Although this was an award usually reserved for simple soldiers, it became a much desired goal for emperors as well. Claudius was awarded the 'corona civica' for having freed Rome from the tyranny of his predecessor, Caligula.
