RIC 12.

Legio XI Claudia, together with the XI, was recruited by Julius Caesar for the campaign against the Helvetii in 58 BC, and he himself oversaw their meticulous and demanding training in order to come to the aid of the Gallic tribes invaded by the enemy. The Helvetii were defeated in the Battle of Bibracte. The legion was involved in numerous military campaigns and also played an important role under Septimius Severus, participating in his campaign against his eastern rival Pescennius Niger. They besieged Byzantium, fought at Issus, and took part in Severus' campaigns against the Parthian Empire, which ended with the capture of Ctesiphon (198). Later, during the conflict between Gallienus and Postumus, Legio XI supported Gallienus, for which it was awarded the titles Pia Fidelis V V (five times faithful and loyal) and Pia VI Fidelis VI. The last records date back to the early 5th century, when the legion was active on the Lower Danube.
