Double strike is a rather common minting error in Roman coinage. Before being minted, the flan was heated to make it more workable. One of the two dies was secured to the anvil with a fixed support. The ‘suppostor’ used tongs to place the marked flan on top of it, then placed the other die on top, which was finally struck by a large hammer wielded by the ‘malleator’. Often, more than one hammer blow was needed to imprint the images on the coin, which explains some minting errors such as double striking, which occurred when the hammer blow was not precise and the flan slipped sideways. This resulted in a coin with one side duplicated.
Condition: Very fine.
Weight: 3.43 g.
Diameter: 19 mm.
Estimate: 250,00 €
