MEDIEVAL SILVER ANNULAR BROOCH (FÜRSPANN TYPE)
12th–14th century.
Silver annular brooch of quatrefoil form, with a faceted and angular frame and a hinged pin. The irregular lobed outline and robust construction are characteristic of medieval dress fasteners used to secure garments or cloaks.
Traces of gilding are visible on the surface.
Diameter: 29 mm.
Weight: 8.72 g. Intact. Traces of fire-gilding. A Fürspann (also Fürspan or Fürspange), is a brooch from the Middle Ages. It fastened the wedge-shaped neckline of the step-in tunic (the cotte), and is thus a special form or successor of the fibula.
