ROMAN. C. Cassius Longinus. Spring 42 BC. Silver Denarius (3.99g). Military mint, probably at Smyrna. P. Cornelius Lentulus Spinther, legatus. Tripod surmounted by cortina and two laurel branches, fillet hanging on either side / Capis and lituus. Crawford 500/1; CRI 219; Sydenham 1308; RSC 7; RBW 1761. Lustrous, with amazing toning. EF. A very attractive piece. Issued in the tense months before Philippi, this denarius of C. Cassius Longinus quietly advertises Republican piety rather than open rebellion. The tripod crowned by the cortina and laurel branches evokes Apollo's oracular authority, a god Cassius hoped would favour his cause, while the capis and lituus on the reverse proclaim priestly legitimacy and traditional Roman religion amid civil war.
