Issued in A.D. 248 to commemorate the Saecular Games celebrating the millennium of Rome's foundation, this type formed part of an extensive commemorative series depicting animals used in the public spectacles. The gazelle symbolised the exotic nature of the games and reflected the grandeur of the celebrations marking Rome's 1000th anniversary. (P)
