BYZANTINE. Anonymous. Temp. Justinian I, circa 530. Silver Third Siliqua or Scripulum (1.28g). Constantinople mint. Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantinopolis right / Large K. Bendall, Anonymous 8; Vagi 3051. Some metal flaws, scratches and hairlines. Lovely old cabinet toning with a hint of iridescence. An exceptional example, one of the finest in existence. Superb EF. This 1/3 Siliqua was struck during the transitional early years of Justinian I's reign. This anonymous third siliqua captures a moment of imperial ambiguity and monetary experimentation. Though small in size, its issuance reflects the broader efforts to stabilise silver currency and assert imperial continuity amid shifting political dynamics in the Eastern Roman world. From the collection of David Allan.
