John Barry shipwreck treasure, a 7,200-ton American Liberty ship sunk during World War II on 28 August 1944, approximately 115 miles off the coast of Oman, after being torpedoed by a German submarine. Lying at a depth estimated around 8,500 feet, the wreck later attracted salvage interest, and in 1994 deep-sea recovery operations recovered 1000s of coins. A historically important Saudi silver issue, linking early Saudi oil history, American minting, and one of the most famous World War II shipwreck coin recoveries.
