The leather belt from which Roman soldiers hung their swords was called balteus. It was not worn around the waist but hung from the right shoulder to the left hip, as can be seen in the portrait of Hadrian on this coin. The depiction of emperors in military attire on coins and statues emphasized their role as military and political leaders.
