Apparently Unpublished Type
Attica, Athens. AE. Roman occupation under Sulla, c. 86-84 BC. D/ Head of Athena right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. R/ Owl standing right, head facing, on amphora; to left and right, monogram; A on amphora; all within wreath. Thompson -, cf. 1330-1339 (Drachms); Cf. HGC 2 1779 (Drachm). 4 g. 19 mm. RRRR. Apparently unpublished. About VF. Extremely interesting. Both types recall the drachms struck during Sulla's landing in Greece to wage war against Mithradates. To date, no bronze examples of that series are known, which could also suggest a contemporary local imitation.
