Vicennalia Issue
Severus Alexander (222-235). AE Sestertius, Rome mint, 231-235AD. D/ IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG. Laureate bust right, with slight drapery. R/ VOTIS VICENNALIBVS COS III P P S C. Legend in five lines within wreath. RIC IV 654 (R3). 18.16 g. 28 mm. RRR. Very rare and interesting Vicennalia issue. Dark green patina. VF/Good VF. The coins commemorating the Vicennalia of Severus Alexander belong to a very limited series in gold, silver, and bronze (with only a single issue of Sestertii), produced in AD 231. Only the year before, the emperor had celebrated the first ten‑year cycle of vows, which makes the early appearance of a vicennalia commemorative issue significantly and unusually premature and raises interesting questions about the possible motivations behind it.
Perhaps the completion of the first series of coins prompted Alexander to issue a new series the following year, in the hope of reigning for another ten years.
