Divus Nigrinianus, son of Carinus (died c. 284 AD). AE Antoninianus. D/ DIVO NIGRINIANO. Radiate bust to right. R/ CONSECRATIO. Eagle standing facing with wings spread, head turned to left; in exergue, [KAA] (?). RIC V 472. AE. 3.27 g. 22 mm. R. Dusty patina. VF.
Struck shortly after the death of the young Nigrinian, this rare consecration antoninianus belongs to the final phase of the Roman imperial coinage before the monetary reforms of Diocletian. Almost nothing is known about Nigrinian beyond the evidence provided by these memorial issues and a single inscription, making his coinage particularly evocative. The reverse eagle, symbol of apotheosis and the soul’s ascent to the heavens, emphasizes the dynastic and religious message of the CONSECRATIO series issued under the house of Carinus. Despite the brevity of his life, Nigrinian’s posthumous coinage preserves the memory of an otherwise nearly lost member of the imperial family.
