Belgium. Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria (1725-1741). Medal, 1734, by J. Roettiers. The Charity of the Governess of the Netherlands. Kenis 18; Bingen 109, 1; Van Loon, Vervolg, 139. 67.57 g. 57 mm. Holed. VF. Archduchess Maria Elisabeth was the sister of Emperor Charles VI. Appointed Governor-General of the Austrian Netherlands in December 1724, she arrived in Brussels in October 1725 and remained in office until her death on 26 August 1741.
According to Bingen, work on this medal was originally begun by Philippe-Louis Roettiers, who died in 1732 before its completion. The piece was subsequently finished by his cousin Jacques Roettiers, who reworked the portrait, softening and rejuvenating the Archduchess’s facial features. The result appears to have met with Maria Elisabeth’s approval, as Jacques Roettiers was appointed Chief Engraver in succession to his cousin in August 1733.
