Vitellius (69 AD). AE As, Spanish mint (Tarraco?). Struck c. January-June 69 AD. D/ A VITELLIVS IMP GERMAN. Laureate head left, [globe] at point of bust. R/ CONSENSUS EXERCITVVM. Mars, helmeted, naked except for cloak floating behind him, advancing left, holding spear in right hand and aquila with vexillum in left. RIC I (2nd ed.) 40 var. (SC across reverse field); C. 25 var. (fr. 15). AE. 13.22 g. 28 mm. RR. Very rare variety. Minor cleaning marks. An outstanding example, with a wonderful Spanish-style portrait. Superb deep olive-green patina.
