Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD). AE As, Rome mint, c. 140 AD. D/ ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P. Laureate head right. R/ TR POT COS III S C. Mars, holding spear and shield, descending right through the air to sleeping Rhea Silvia, reclining left on the ground, naked to waist and with hands behind her head. RIC III 694a. AE. 11.9 g. 27.5 mm. RR. Irregular flan. Very rare reverse type. Green patina. VF. One of the most evocative reverse types of Antoninus Pius, depicting the legendary moment when Mars descends from heaven to the sleeping Rhea Silvia. Their divine union would result in the birth of Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. Rather than celebrating a military victory or an imperial virtue, this rare reverse recalls the sacred origins of the Eternal City, making it one of the most fascinating mythological types in the Roman Imperial series.
