Spain. Ferdinand V and Isabella I (1474-1504). Double Excellente, Sevilla. Calicó 720; Fried. 129. 6.95 g. 28.5 mm. Bent flan. About VF. The marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon (1452–1516) and Isabella of Castile (1451–1504) united the two most powerful kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and laid the foundations for the emergence of Spain as a major European power. Their reign brought greater political cohesion and inaugurated a period of remarkable cultural, military and economic development, often regarded as the beginning of Spain's Golden Age.
In 1478, with papal approval, the Spanish Crown established the Inquisition, initially in Castile and later throughout the unified realms. Intended to enforce religious conformity, it resulted in the persecution and eventual expulsion of large Jewish and Muslim communities.
At the same time, Spain entered an unprecedented era of overseas expansion. The completion of the Reconquista redirected the kingdom's military ambitions toward exploration across the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus reached the Americas in 1492, Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and became the first European to view the Pacific Ocean in 1513, and the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano, achieved the first circumnavigation of the globe in the early 1520s. These achievements established Spain as the leading maritime and colonial power of the sixteenth century.
