Della tiratura originaria di 200 milioni, ne furono coniati solo 13.782.000: le autorità di occupazione tedesche bloccarono la produzione per requisire il nichel della Monnaie de Paris a fini bellici, ritenendo sufficienti le banconote pari valore già in circolo. Immagazzinate per tre anni a Castelsarrasin senza mai circolare, le monete furono spedite in Germania per essere fuse, ma il battello che le trasportava affondò nel fiume Sambre (Belgio) a causa di un bombardamento alleato. Si stima che solo 50.000 esemplari siano stati recuperati dal relitto MS 63
