Gil - Herrera 306 AE (g 78.31 - 55 mm) This medal celebrates the success of the repopulation of the Sierra Morena, an ambitious social experiment of the Spanish Enlightenment under Charles III. To secure and develop the strategic road between Madrid and Cadiz, then deserted and infested by bandits, the Spanish Crown attracted thousands of German and Swiss Catholic settlers, founding agricultural communities based on egalitarian ideals. The refined allegory on the reverse exalts the pillars of the king's project: Agriculture and Industry which, under the guidance of Hispania, brought civilization, order and progress to a once-wild territory.
