SPAGNA Carlo III (1759-1788) Messico - Real 1769/70 M - KM 77; Cal. 420 AG In slab NGC XF 45 cod. 6692659-006. XF 45

At the time, given the high cost of steel, the dies sent from Spain to the colonies were regularly re-engraved and used until they were completely worn out. They were often sent with the date incomplete, allowing local mints to complete the last digit if necessary. This example was probably produced by backdating a coinage prepared for 1770 that had only the first three digits punched; it was therefore sufficient to stamp the ""6"" over the ""7"". XF 45
