Claudius (41-54 AD). AE Sestertius, Rome mint, 41-50 AD. D/ TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M [TR P I]M[P]. Laureate head right. R/ SPES AVGVSTA S C. Spes, draped, advancing left, holding flower in right hand and raising skirt with left. c/m NCAPR within rectangular incuse. Pangerl 60 (for countermark); RIC I (2nd ed.) 99 (for undertype). AE. 26.7 g. 36 mm. Corrosion and cuprite spots. Clear countermark. About VF/F. The counterstamp has been said to mean N(ummus) C(aesare) A(ugusto) PR(obatus) and to be of Flavian date, or to have been applied by the successor of Claudius and to mean N(ero) C(aesar) A(ugustus) PR(obavit). Another proposed solution reads N(eronis) C(aesaris) A(ugusti) P(opulique) R(omani).
