Southern Lucania, Heraclea. AE 15 mm, 280-150 BC. D/ Helmeted head of Athena right. R/ Glaukos right, holding spear and shield; below, ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΩΝ. HN Italy 1437; HGC 1 1015; SNG Cop. 1141. AE. 3.58 g. 15 mm. Rare type. About VF. In Greek mythology, Glaukos was a prophetic sea-god, born mortal and turned immortal upon eating a magical herb. It was believed that he came to the rescue of sailors and fishermen in storms, having earlier earned a living from the sea himself.
