GOLD RING SET WITH A NICOLO INTAGLIO.
Roman period, 1st - 3rd century.
A gold ring with a large massive round hoop and outbroad shoulders extending into an oval bezel set with a nicolo intaglio. The intaglio depicts a laureate portrait head looking left, maybe Apollo. Nicolo is a cameo or intaglio that is carved in onyx in such a way that the image displays a translucent bluish/grey color. This thin top layer of design lays atop a thicker layer of black material that shows through, imbuing the design with the characteristic tint of blue. Nicolo pieces have been carved since antiquity.
Dimensions: 21.5 x 19.5 mm. 9.58 g.
