ROMAN BRONZE TINTINNABULUM. A Roman bronze tintinnabulum of compact, slightly tapering form, widening towards the base. The rounded upper section is pierced by a large, irregular oval suspension opening. Roman Period, 1st–3rd century AD.
Dimensions: 63 × 37 mm.
56.64 g. Tintinnabula were small sounding objects used throughout the Roman world. They could be suspended and employed for practical purposes, while in certain contexts bells and related sounding objects were also associated with apotropaic and protective functions.
