Amphitrite, one of the Nereids, was Posidon's official bride, with a role akin to that of Hera to Zeus. She, at first, was not available for marriage and took refuge on the Atlas mountain. But then she was persuaded by a delegation headed by a Dolphin, whose memory Poseidon immortalised in a constellation out of gratitude. Lady of the underwater caves, Amphitrite kept there jewels worthy of the queen of the sea, and generally left her sumptuous flats only to look after the countless and monstrous animals of the ocean depths, subjected to her. The deity depicted on this coin must more properly be identified as Salacia, Neptune's bride, who in Rome was essentially identified with Amphitrite.
