IVSTITI/AE VINDEX / CARIT/ATIS ALTOR / POPVL/ORVM / PROVEHIT PACEM, within a three-bayed tabernacle-shaped aedicula surmounted by the inscription IVSTITIA CARITAS PAX, the personifications of the three virtues of the papal programme: in the first bay Justice, a female figure with his sword laid down and the scales in his hand; in the second Charity, as the Virgin and Child with an orphan clinging to her robes; in the third Peace, a female figure with the dove. Struck for the eightieth birthday of the Pope, born in Rome on 2 March 1876, the medal renders in imagery his heraldic motto "Opus iustitiae pax" through the triad Iustitia – Caritas – Pax, recurrent throughout the medallic output of the pontificate.
