The Pope’s twenty-second apostolic journey, and his first visit to Switzerland after his brief stop in Geneva in 1982, took place from 12 to 17 June 1984, visiting fourteen locations. The journey had originally been planned for 1981 but was postponed following the assassination attempt in St Peter’s Square. The legend UT UNUM SINT (John 17:21) refers to the strongly ecumenical character of the visit, which included meetings with the World Council of Churches in Geneva and the Federation of Protestant Churches in Kehrsatz. On 15 June, at Einsiedeln, John Paul II consecrated the high altar of the basilica during the abbey’s 1,050th anniversary celebrations. Bronze.
