AE Tessera (?), Roman Empire, c. 1st-2nd century AD. Tessera. D/ Upright scepter, surmounted by bare-headed male head left. R/ A•P•P•F within oak wreath. 2.93 g. 17 mm. Some corrosion spots. About VF. According to Bernhard Woytek (IO IO TRIVMP und A.P.P.F. Zu zwei Typen römischer Buntmetall-Tesserae, in: W. Szaivert et al. (Hg.), TOYTO APECH TH XWPA. Festschrift für Wolfgang Hahn zum 70. Geburtstag (VIN 16), Wien 2015, 479‒498, Nr. 10-12), this tessera belongs to the context of the triumphal celebrations. The legend should therefore be interpreted as A(ugusto) P(atri) P(atriae) F(eliciter), which means 'To Augustus, the happy father of the country.' The wreath surrounding the legend represents the corona ex auro Etrusca. The object on the obverse is a type of ceremonial scepter carried by the Roman magistrates responsible for the games. These tesserae were thrown into the crowd as a kind of gift or souvenir.
