Calabria. Tarentum. Time of Cleonymus: circa 303-302 BC. Tetrobol or Third Stater (Gold, 13.8 mm, 2.84 g). Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet decorated with serpent. Rev. Phalanthus, holding ornamental trident, driving biga right; above, star above; below, dolphin. HN Italy 956. Vlasto 20 (same dies) = Fischer-Bossert G68i (2.81 g). Reddish old collection patina. Very Fine. Rare. This specimen closely resembles the Vlasto specimen, both in terms of preservation and flan shape, particularly on the obverse. The Vlasto specimen, from the Guilhou Collection, was sold by Sambon at auction in Paris on 20 March 1905. It is known today only through photographs of two casts made at different times: one by Sambon prior to the sale, and another by Vlasto’s son, made for submission to Ravel. The weight of 2.81 g recorded in Sambon’s 1905 auction catalogue was subsequently reported by Vlasto and, in turn, by Fischer-Bossert. More than 120 years old, this recorded weight does not appear to differ significantly from that of the present specimen. From the Poor Scholar Collection.
