Island off Elis. Kranion in Kephallenia. Circa 400 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 6.46 mm, 0.21 g). Large Κ. Rev. Large Η with a pellet; all within a circular incuse. Cf. BMC 47 (bronze type, possibly without pellet). Cf. Kricheldorf XIX, 1968, lot 258 (but misnumbered 259 on the plate). Cf. Nomos 26, lot 363 (same dies). Cf. Nomos 38, lot 263 (without pellet on reverse). Porosity. Near Very Fine. Apparently unpublished and Extremely Rare: possibly the third specimen known. Despite its archaic appearance, this hemiobol was probably struck in the late 5th or early 4th century BC. A bronze coin of Kranion in the British Museum, dated to the 4th century and bearing the same types, suggests that the city soon replaced its small silver denominations with bronze issues, retaining the same types to indicate continuity.
